English language proficiency

Unless you are planning to study English, most institutions require reasonable proficiency in the English language. A number of different testing and scoring methods are used to ascertain proficiency.

International students can provide their results from one of these three options:

  1. an accepted English language proficiency test: take a test and reach the minimum scores required by the education providers, or
  2. an accepted English language provider, complete the required English study module no more than 12 months prior to the main program commencement date, or
  3. a recognised qualification, the Australian and international qualifications can be used to determine English language proficiency for admission to certain programs. And some countries are recognised by Education Providers as English speaking countries.

Below are some English language proficiency tests used by education providers:

IELTS https://www.ielts.org/

International English Language Testing System. Candidates are graded on four tests (listening, reading, writing and speaking) using scores from 1 to 9. The results produce an Overall Band Score.

TOEFL (The revised Paper Based Test

Test of English as a Foreign Language using paper test, only offered in locations where testing via the internet is not available. There is no total score. For more info, click on Earning a score

TOEFL (Internet Based Test - iBT

Test of English as a Foreign Language delivered via the internet. Candidates are graded on four tests (listening, reading, writing and speaking) using scores from 0 to 30 for each of 4 scaled selection, with total score ranging from 0 to 120.

TAFE: Registered vocational education, training and adult learning institutes.

PTE: Pearson Test of English. The PTE Academic Score Report includes your overall score, communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores.

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) is targeted at Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Below are the common scores required, although minimum levels may differ across institutions and programs:

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and TAFE

  • Academic IELTS 5.5 (no band less than 5.0)
  • TOEFL: (paper-based test) 530 (TWE 3.5)
  • TOEFL: (iBT) overall score of 71 with minimum of 17 in any sections
  • PTE: (Academic) 42 (no band less than 36).

Accelerated Foundation Studies

  • Academic IELTS: 5.5 (no band less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL: (paper-based test) 535 (TWE 4.0)
  • TOEFL: (iBT) overall score of 75 with minimum of 18 in all sections
  • PTE (Academic): 46 (no band less than 40). 

Undergraduate courses

  • Academic IELTS: (minimum scores) overall band of 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0
  • TOEFL: (paper-based test) minimum score of 580 with TWE score of 4.5
  • TOEFL: (iBT) minimum score of 92 with a minimum of 20 in each section
  • Cambridge English (Advanced CAE): Grade B
  • PTE (Academic): minimum score of 58 (no band less than 50).

Postgraduate courses

  • Academic IELTS: (minimum scores) overall band of 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0
  • TOEFL: (paper-based) minimum score of 580 TWE score of 4.5
  • TOEFL: (iBT) minimum score of 92 with a minimum of 20 in each section
  • Cambridge English (Advanced CAE): Grade B
  • PTE (Academic): minimum score of 58 (no band less than 50).
